The Kano State Government has formally resolved the nearly 50-year land dispute between Bayero University Kano (BUK) and the Rimin Zakara, Rijiyar Zaki and adjoining communities.
The resolution followed a comprehensive compensation and resettlement programme, under which over 6,000 claims were identified and processed, with residential plots allocated to verified beneficiaries. Monetary compensation for eligible claims and structures is also ongoing.
The government said the settlement protects BUK’s land for present and future development while providing relief to genuine victims and restoring lasting peace.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf warned land grabbers and residents against encroaching on the protected land, stressing that from August 31, 2026, all land within BUK’s surveyed boundaries would be reserved exclusively for the university.
The settlement was also reinforced by a Kano State High Court judgment delivered on August 18, 2026, which upheld the land acquisition and directed compensation for verified claims.
